Dalam upacara pembukaan itu juga dilakukan mengheningkan cipta selama semenit. Ini dilakukan untuk para korban teroris yang menyerang tim Togo, hingga menewaskan tiga orang di Cabinda, Jumat (8/1). Togo sendiri akhirnya mengundurkan diri dari Piala Afrika, karena merasa tak mendapatkan jaminan keamanan.

"Meski ada serangan dari teroris, Cabinda akan tetap menjadi tuan rumah. Tak perlu takut," tegas Presiden Angola, Jose Eduardo dos Santos.

Beberapa kepala negara di Afrika juga menghadiri upacara pembukaan Piala Afrika. Presiden Afrika Selatan, Jacob Zuma, juga ikut hadir. Negaranya akan menjadi tuan rumah Piala Afrika, Juni nanti.
